Shunya / The Silence

Ek shaam Saumya shanti aur shashi ke sahchar, shunya ki nirvata mein baithi thi. The stillness of the night had its own subtle noise when listened to with full focus. The crickets were playing their own raag. The air was fresh after a rain shower, moonlight falling softly on the porch, while the plants waved with the soft wind, the rustle of leaves reaching her ears.

She was sitting with no expression on her face—calm, with no stress lines on her forehead, the way it rested when she was in deep thought. The cup in her hand was warm, releasing steam vapours, her earphones plugged in and playing her favourite song, "Tenu Dil Da Vasta". Her eyes were closed, feeling the air touch her cheeks softly, the tune calming her soul.

"Kaisa Khuda hai tu, bass naam ka hai..." the line played, and a tear silently fell on her cheek.

Suddenly, a sound from her phone broke the stillness of the moment. Saumya quietly set her cup on the side and picked up her phone. The glow of the screen light fell on her face. The moment her eyes shifted focus from the screen towards the notification, her breath stopped for a second. The tears were on the verge of wanting to cross the edge of her eyes.

Her breath stopped for nearly ten seconds.

Finally, a sigh escaped from her mouth, and she tapped on the popped notification.

What she saw was something forgotten years ago, but suddenly, the environment filled with a heavy gravity as she read the email:

Dear Saumya,

I know ki tum ab independent ho gyi ho. Ab tum shyd bhool gyi hogi ki tumne kabhi sapna dekha tha khud ki bakery open karne ka. Tum bola karti thi ki Saturday, Sunday tum wahan apna samay dogi. I wish tum yeh sapna pura karogi aur uska naam woh rakhogi jo tumne apne dost ke saath mil kar decide kiya tha—"Saurang treats"...

As she read through the email written years ago as hope or innocent dream to be fullfilled in future . Tears pooled at the corners of her eyes.

It was as if a dam was on the verge of breaking any second. She inhaled a deep breath and closed her eyes, and suddenly, a faint voice started ringing in her ears. The laughter, the voice long forgotten... she tried to remember the voice, the words focusing deeply.

Suddenly, a memory struck her. She desperately began scrolling through her email inbox, trying to search for emails from years ago hidden in important compartments, but she found nothing. She tried again, scrolling through all her important folders, but there was nothing.

Then, she suddenly remembered something. She stood up and started looking for her old mobile phone, which was kept safely in a cardboard box filled with all her important essentials from years ago.

As she dug through it, she found a book. Carved on the cover were the words: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. She turned the pages of the book desperately, tears falling silently, and as she finally reached the last page of the book, she read aloud the handwritten note:

"BEAUTIFUL GIFT BY MY LOVELY FRIENDS ❤️"

And there, on the top-left corner, was a date: 2 August.

Saumya's POV:

The moment I found the book, something struck me—the vivid memory of the day I received it. I remembered thanking my best friend for the gift, and her telling me how it was a gift from both of them... her and TARANG.

The moment the name Tarang crossed my mind, I felt as if someone had poured freezing cold water over me. My heart started to ache, swelling with a feeling I hadn't felt in all these previous years. I thought i burried all the feelings and memories long ago but today the moment my fingers touched the things i felt as if i failed .

Trembling, I kept my phone and the book aside, putting the box back into its place . But the feelings ,memories kept coming back no matter how hard i try to forget everything and move on . No matter how many times i told myself its nothing ..

You are strong saumya .

You have lived all these years without looking back .

You will live more.

With all these thoughts I kept the phone back on the table and picked the book and started reading it all over again to distract my restless mind and heart .
